Square cushions are an ideal format for kogin whether you choose a simple repeating design, like me, or an elaborate medallion motif. The neko no ashi (cat’s paw) pattern that I have used is easy to stitch, but it can be swapped with another small motif if you prefer. The shaded autumnal colour scheme was suggested by a chance encounter of nine soft cotton skeins in a thread basket but can be easily adapted to a different inspiration. Finish the cushion with a quick and easy envelope back; match the front panel fabric, or choose a coordinating stripe for a more colourful effect.
